An early design was shown more like a cabinet than a tray, inside a plastic that absorbs CO2. At first they used chemicals to wash the CO2 out of the plastic so it could be reused. But this needed too much energy to be viable. Then they made a discovery that was quite simple. A key property of Lackner's device is that the plastic sorbent gives back CO2 readily if you simply get it wet. The sorbent will feed the plant carbon dioxide and help it grow. Lackner says the experiment is about "finding a temporary use" for some of the carbon dioxide that has been pulled from the air.
